Youth developed through mini-cricket

Over 992 children attended the Northern Cape KFC Mini-Cricket Festival at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Friday, 25 October.

The festivities started with KFC celebrating the ten-year milestone in partnership with Cricket South Africa (CSA) and recognising ten volunteer coaches for their efforts and unwavering contribution to the programme over the past ten years.

These coaches are Idah Modise, Myrillia Horne, Zuleiga Barday, Joyce London, Saeleen Bloem Back, Edith Mosarwe, Jeffrey van Wyk, Evelyn Mayane, Tillie Tawana and Rachel Solomon.

Members of the Northern Cape’s men’s and women’s teams attended the festival.

“My role is to give back to the youngsters, pass on what I learned when I played mini-cricket and make sure the kids have fun,” said Northern Cape cricketer Aubrey Swanepoel.

“The KFC mini-cricketers can take advantage of meeting so many kids at the festival and making new friends.”

“It is awesome to see how many girls and boys are at the festival, having loads of fun. I am especially impressed with the girls’ talent,” said cricketer Michaela van Vuuren.

Altogether 124 000 learners of 6 495 schools take part in more than 44 000 KFC Mini-Cricket matches around the country.

The KFC Mini-Cricket programme remains one of the most significant development programmes in the South African sporting landscape and goes far beyond the game of cricket.
