Bay residents invited to ‘Get Hands Dirty’

INTERNATIONAL Coastal Clean-Up Day is just around the corner, taking place on Saturday, September 15.

During this day thousands of tons of waste is removed by tens of thousands of volunteers globally. Last year, in Port Elizabeth, over 12 tons was removed around the coast.

This year patrons are once again invited to join the campaign which will also collect data on the “Dirty Dozen”, the 12 items most found on clean-ups, to compare between beaches.

Clean-ups organised in and around Port Elizabeth this year are as follows:

  • Colchester. Organised by the local community. Contact Dennis Spicer on 082 9377 288.
  • Blue Water Bay. Organised by the Zwartkops Conservancy. Starts at 09:30 at the BWB swimming beach, at the bottom of Weinronk Way. Bags provided but bring gloves. Contact Jenny Rump on 082 853 0700.
  • Motherwell storm water canal. Organised by the Zwartkops Conservancy. Starts at 09:30 at Tyinira Street in Motherwell, just off the M17. Bags and gloves provided. Contact Luthando on 083 228 7325 or Jenny Rump on 082 853 0700.
  • Swartkops River by kayak. Organised by Schotia Safaris.
  • Baakens Valley. Organised by Valley Crag. Starts at 09:30 at Valley Crag Climbing Gym.
  • Hobie Beach. Organised by ProDive. Starts at 12:30 by the pier. Bags provided but bring gloves. Contact Linda on 079 352 0965.
  • Cape Recife. Organised jointly by SANCCOB and WESSA. Starts at 09:30 at SANCCOB. Bags provided. Contact Luc Hosten on 072 265 4073.
  • Schoenies. Organised by the Port Elizabeth Permaculture Group. Starts at 09:30 in front of the Sacramento restaurant. Bags provided but bring gloves. Contact Krag Lohry on 083 290 0414.
  • Maitlands Beach. Organised by Raggy Charters. Starts at 09:30 at the car park. Bags provided but bring gloves. Contact Lloyd Edwards on 084 552 2277.
  • Blue Horizon Bay. Organised by the local community. Contact johann@sapicasso.co.za.
  • The Shoprite Group is inviting the community to participate in its clean-up campaigns across the Eastern Cape. The meeting point for the clean-up campaign in the Bethelsdorp area is at the Shoprite in Norman Middleton Street at 10:00 on Saturday.

In addition, the beach between Coega harbour and Sundays River will be cleaned by the 4x4 Club Association, St Georges Strand by Coca-Cola, King’s Beach, by Woolworths and 500 registered learners, Pollock Beach/Flat Rocks by the South African National Defence Force, and the open field across from EC Motors dealership on William Moffett by EC Motors.

The Sustainable Seas Trust has also organised several schools, such as St Colmcille High School, Collegiate Junior School, Woodridge Primary School, DF Malherbe and Kwezi Lomso, to also participate all along the week.
