Candidates to contest by-election planned for Ward 55

THE by-election for Ward 55 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, will be contested by an all-female group of candidates on February 5.

This comes after the passing of Ward 55 councillor, Mzuvukile Boti, who died at Livingstone Hospital after falling ill last year.

According to a statement issued by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), there are currently a total of 10 787 registered voters in the ward who will be eligible to cast their votes on February 5.

Ward 55, which falls within the Motherwell area, has a total of five voting stations.

These include the Ncedo High School (2 103 registered voters), Jerusalem Church (2 643 registered voters), Melisizwe Primary School (1 628 registered voters), St Johns Apostolic Church (2 536 registered voters) and Old Bantu Congregation (1 877 registered voters).

Voting stations will be operational from 07:00 to 21:00.

Julie Stanworth, IEC spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, said that during the last Local Government Elections held in 2016, the ward was won by the ANC candidate by obtaining 74.91% of the 6 441 valid votes.

The following candidates for the Ward 55 by-election had been confirmed:

. African National Congress – Ntombizodwa Nyati;

. Economic Freedom Fighters – Fundiswa Constance Cacela;

. Independent Candidate – Noxolo Alicia Mafumana;

. Socialist Revolutionary Workers Party – Nobuhle Jacobs;

. United Democratic Movement – Nomakaya Ntozini.

Stanworth said, “A reminder that in order to be able to vote, you need to be a registered voter and to bring your green bar-coded ID book, smart ID card or a valid temporary identity certificate with you to the voting station.

“It is a criminal offence to register in a ward where you don’t reside,” she said.
