Flight school reaches out to underprivileged children

MADIBA Bay School of Flight in Port Elizabeth has opened its doors to several early childhood development (ECD) centres from underprivileged areas around Nelson Mandela Bay.

As part of an incentive programme linked to Early Inspiration, an ECD training centre in Port Elizabeth, the centres were selected to participate in an educational outing.

Joshua Rehse, a student pilot and cadet at Madiba Bay School of Flight, said, “For us, aviation is all about giving back and the more we give in this industry, the more we get back. I choose to commit to my profession and seeing the kids’ faces light up and sing as they see an aircraft up close for the first time is beyond priceless.”

Madiba Bay Flight School is said to be dedicated to “making flight dreams a reality”.

It has given numerous children the opportunity to realise their dream of experiencing an aeroplane up close.

“We are a family of pilots who are super passionate about flying, which is why we are excited to offer this platform for children to see aviation as a possible career path.

“Many people often think aviation is out of their grasp, but that is most certainly not the case. These children could very well be the future of aviation,” said Rehse.

With a guided tour of the school, an interactive talk and the opportunity for each child to sit inside an aeroplane, the fight school went out of its way to educate and encourage dialogue regarding the topics of transport, flight and safety.

Early childhood education is a priority area for development in South Africa.

Transport is a theme that is part of the ECD lessons for toddlers and young children which occur throughout the year in preschool classrooms.

Jessica Ronaasen, social worker and ECD facilitator from Early Inspiration, said, “We are delighted to have our ECD centres exposed to real world experiences and this is a wonderful opportunity for these children to see and experience a world of transport through flight.”

Visits to the flight school will continue into early 2019.
