Load shedding: NMBM new domestic groups

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality announced on Wednesday (February 26), that they have made numerous changes to the Metro's load shedding schedules and groups. These changes will be in place from Monday, March 2.

Domestic groups will now increase from eight to 19 with additional suburbs added. Industrial groups will increase from eight to 11.

Luvuyo Magalela, NMBM's Executive Director of Electricity and Energy, said that the schedules were calculated equitably over an eight-day cycle. The new schedule will be calculated over a nineteen-day cycle with a reduction in the number of times a group is shed. This means that domestic groups will not be shed for longer than two hours at a time, regardless of the stage.

Magalela also said that although industrial areas don't shed, if Eskom announces the emergency stages (five to eight) and these areas are required to shed, it will only be for four hours at a time.

"I think it's important to note that we, as the NMBM, would have preferred to not have load shedding at all," Magalela said. "When our customers are switched off for lengthy periods, it costs us much-needed revenue, money that could have gone towards providing better services to our constituencies."

"However, it is part of our reality and we have to deal with this inconvenient but necessary occurrence to ensure that the reliability of the national power grid is not compromised," Magalela added. - Candice Bezuidenhout
