Teens take to basketball court

FORMIDABLE Eastern Cape basketball side PE Comets are preparing to host their seventh annual Schools’ Basketball Tournament at Motherwell NU 5 Basketball Park and Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sports Centre from today, January 22, to Saturday, January 25.

According to PE Comets chairperson, Sibongile Fondini, the aim of the tournament is to keep the youth involved in sport.

“Our club does not have financial resources, but we try to keep the youth involved in sport.

“We fully understand that there are many social ills that are challenges to our youth in our societies. The child in sport is the child out of court. We look forward to seeing lots of basketball fans during our programme.”

Fondini revealed that the tournament was organised for u/16 boys, u/18 girls and u/18 boys.

The participating u/16 teams are St Andrews College, Khwezi Lomso High School, Grey High School A and B, Kingswood College and Coselelani High School.

In the u/18 girls’ category, fans will see Diocesan Schools for Girls A and B and Kingswood College in action, while the u/18 boys’ teams are Kingswood College, Grey High School A and B, Khwezi Lomso High School, St Andrews College and PE Comets.

Today, January 22, fans will see Grey B taking on Khwezi Lomso in the boys’ u/16 category at 14:30, while Khwezi Lomso play against Grey A in the boys’ u/18 category at 15:20.

Both games are taking place at the Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sports Centre.
