Acts of kindness

The young learners of Courtrai Primary School reached out to the plight of the elderly this week to show their appreciation to them.

This was part of their regular outreach initiatives of the school to give back to the community.

Delenia Jaeggi-Wright, the organiser of the latest initiative, said her own grandfather is in isolation in an old age home in Italy and she is very much aware of how difficult these times are for the elderly.

Because the elderly are so vulnerable, residents of old age homes have been in isolation since before the official Covid-19 lockdown started as a health and safety precaution.

Delenia said that the English Grade 3 and 5 learners of Courtrai Primary school were then given the task of each writing a letter to one of the elderly English residents of Huis Vergenoegd and Oude Renbaan in Paarl. These letters were also first assessed by their teachers and will be marked as part of their school curriculum, killing two birds with one stone.

But the youngsters also used their own initiative to give a little extra and together with their letters, they brought along treats for the elderly as well.

On Monday (27 July) they delivered the little parcels to the two old age homes, but were not themselves allowed to enter the premises, and all goods were sanitised on site before being distributed to the recipients.

Delenia said she would like to see this project grow into a pen-pal relationship between two far apart generations and encourages other schools to reach out to the elderly.
