Alleged cat burglars caught in roof of Bacchus Pub

A hive of police activity surrounded the popular Bacchus Pub in Paarl’s Main Road last Thursday 3
May after a burglary.

A Paarl Police report stated that two men were arrested at the popular hang-out spot above KFC on Thursday 3 May.

According to an employee of the pub who has been working there for many years and does not want to be named, he left the premises with two of his colleagues at half past two in the morning.

“It was very quiet last night, I didn’t even know that there was anyone in the building.”

When police arrived on the scene at approximately 06:00 one suspect was apprehended with a laptop and various tools.

The suspect then informed the police that another suspect was hiding in the roof of the premises.

The suspects gained access through the roof but could not gain further access to the pub after an alarm sensor was triggered in the roof which initiated the ADT alarm system.

Despite not having any security present, owner Lee Roeshin van der Merwe said that this was not a regular occurrence and that the last time such an incident took place was roughly five years ago.

Van der Merwe says he was contacted by the police about the attempted burglary and went there to unlock the premises. He said that the suspects were unknown to him.

The K9 unit was called to assist and the second suspect was arrested later that afternoon.

The suspects, Willem Odendaal and Aviwe Qwabi appeared in the Paarl Magistrates court on Monday 7 May and have been remanded into custody until 15 May.
