Another tourist attacked

A shameful picture is being portrayed internationally after a spike of assaults on tourists in the Drakenstein area.

In the most recent incident, Paarl couple Barry and Jean Hannah welcomed an Italian man on a business trip to Paarl recently. The man is a technical support practitioner for equipment used in the wine industry and Barry said his expertise are valuable to the industry.

“We had dinner at Bossa Nova last Monday evening 26 November after which he went back to his guest house across the road,” said Barry.

The man was then approached by a woman who was begging. He was about to give her some money when she signalled her accomplice, a nearby car guard. They then both attacked the Italian visitor. After a physical altercation, they fled with the man’s cell phone, wedding ring and wallet.

Barry said the guest house phoned the police immediately after the attack. Barry was also informed and returned to the scene.

“The police only arrived about an hour later. When asked if they have torches to search the area for the wallet, they said ‘no’.”

According to Barry they later learnt the culprits were arrested. However, when they wanted to go and identify them the police informed them the suspects had already been released.

Gerald Esau of the Drakenstein Municipality explained that when a car guard is caught committing a crime, they are fined or summoned to court. This is difficult, as car guards often do not own identification documents, provide false information or simply do not appear for court proceedings.

“New legislation allows law enforcement officers to arrest and detain car guards,” said Esau.
