Baby left on tracks, survives

A mother of three children and the father of her baby boy are facing charges of attempted murder and child abandonment after leaving their baby boy on railway tracks.

According to Mbekweni police, the 26-year-old mother and 32-year-old father left their baby on the railway tracks next to Drommedaris Street, near the Nederpark Informal Settlement, on Saturday 5 May at 06:00.

According to Lt-Col Marissa Gordon-September, commander of the SAPS Unit for Domestic Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS), the 11-month-old was saved from certain death when he was spotted on the tracks by a passerby.

“The person saw something wriggling on the tracks, and when he approached it, only then did he discover that it was a baby wrapped up in a blanket,” she said. “The man went closer without looking at what the baby looked like and picked up the baby and walked with the boy.

“He then carried the baby to the nearby Nederpark informal settlement looking for his parents. Residents identified the baby saying they knew the baby’s mother.”

The Mbekweni police were then contacted. After their arrival, the baby started having seizures as they took a statement from the man who had found him.

It was discovered the baby had sustained a head injury at some stage, and the police rushed him to Paarl Hospital for medical treatment.

Shortly afterwards, the baby was transferred to Tygerberg Hospital for further treatment.

After locating the baby’s mother, the community of Nederpark decided to take matters into their own hands and assaulted her, prompting police to call for reinforcements to control the crowd.

The baby’s mother and father were arrested on the same day. They appeared in the Paarl Magistrate’s court on 7 May and the case was postponed until Friday 11 May.

The parents are still in custody.

The baby, meanwhile, been discharged from hospital and is now in a place of safety.
