BMX trail ‘wheelie drops’ its way into Paarl at Boy Louw

Paarl is continually adding new additions to its already wide variety of sports facilities, and this time a BMX trail has peddled its way into town.

Following the appointment of a contractor in April 2019, the bulk earthworks for the construction of the exciting new BMX-track started in May this year.

According to Gerald Esau of the Drakenstein Municipality, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) recently decided to relocate its South African base from Pretoria to Paarl, and this idea was tabled at Drakenstein Municipality’s Development Investment Forum.

Part of the motivation is that Drakenstein’s youth will be able to train at the international standard BMX track (according to UCI design).

Esau explained that the initial BMX track is currently being built at the Boy Louw Sports Ground, while more tracks are being planned at other facilities in Drakenstein, where suitable space is available.

The bulk earthworks for the construction of the BMX track will be completed by 17 July (but the estimated completion date may vary due to inclement weather).

The construction value of the project is R700 000 and will be open to the public. BMX clubs will also use the facility, provide training to interested youngsters and it is expected to host a few competitions as well.

Esau also said, following regular meetings and consultation with relevant stakeholders, site visits were conducted together with the UCI and local cycling clubs at various facilities in Paarl and Wellington.

He said: “The outcome was that the most suitable site for immediate construction was the Boy Louw Sports Ground, with future BMX tracks planned for other facilities in future.”

Criteria for the track included the use of other existing facilities surrounding the track, existing ablution facilities, lighting, security and accessibility.

The bulk earthworks only entail the import and compaction of gravel-based materials and sand, shaped and placed according to design levels and measurements as per UCI design.
