Drakenstein strives to become water resource independent

In its quest to become as water resource independent as possible, Drakenstein Municipality is currently testing the market regarding the possibility of transforming effluent (waste water) into reusable potable water.

The Municipality has invited requests for proposals from companies for the treatment of effluent from the Paarl and Wellington Wastewater Works for direct potable re-use. These proposals may be submitted until 24 May. No final decision has however been made to pursue this route yet or tender process started.

The source of the majority of Paarl and Wellington’s water is Wemmershoek Dam, which the Municipality shares with the City of Cape Town.

As the Municipality deals with the ongoing effects of the drought, it is strengthening Drakenstein’s own water resources. This forms part of its comprehensive drought management plan and should also assist it in keeping down water tariffs. Other additional sources the Municipality are currently establishing or exploring, include boreholes and winter water storage dams.
