Drakenstein water restrictions to be lifted

After years of water restrictions as well as high tariffs, Drakenstein Municipality will be lifting water restrictions and lowering water tariffs.

This comes after the City of Cape Town this week announced it will be lifting water restrictions as well as lowering the water tariffs.

Its announcement comes in light of the National Department of Water and Sanitation’s lifting of its restrictions on the Western Cape water supply system of shared dams, as the dam levels are generally 100% full. A current projection also indicates dams will probably not have fallen below 50% by next winter.

“In this regard Drakenstein Municipality is bound by decisions taken by the National Department of Water and Sanitation as well as the City of Cape Town, as Drakenstein Municipality shares water resources with the City,” municipal spokesperson Riana Geldenhuys pointed out.

She said the municipality in principle supported the lifting of water restrictions and the lowering of water tariffs, given the Western Cape has experienced good rains and its dams are fuller than they have been for a number of years.

Geldenhuys confirmed that, following the decision of the City to lower water restrictions, Drakenstein Municipality will also be lowering its water restrictions and tariffs. More details in this regard will be communicated in the next two weeks.

The public is, however, urged to maintain responsible usage of water supplies.
