Gold for childhood cancer awareness

With September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month the Little Fighters Cancer Trust (LFCT) invites you to help them turn our town gold.

According to Lizelma Olivier of the LFCT, since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic 17 new families with a child diagnosed with cancer joined the Little Fighters.

Olivier explained that financially it is not going very well with the families because one parent already had to give up their work to take care of the child diagnosed with cancer.

The pandemic also had a huge impact on the local economy and as a result some parens lost their jobs.

With the strict hospital protocols now in place children diagnosed with cancer are not allowed to stay over at the hospital when they go for their chemotherapy treatment.

This means parents sometimes have to take their child for treatment on a weekly basis, bringing further financial difficulties to cover the cost of transport.

Olivier also said the LFCT had to close their office in Kasteel Street in the CBD; they, however, still take in and sell second-hand items as part of raising money for the organisation.

Businesses and individuals who would like to be part of this month’s awareness campaign to turn the town gold with ribbons, can do so by making a donation of R50 per tree.

LFCT is also selling masks and bandanas. LFCT can also issue 18A certificates.
