Key to urban renewal the CBDs

In 2017 Drakenstein Municipality approved a long-term strategic plan called Vision 2032 which outlines the municipality’s strategic priorities to build a city of excellence within the next 14 years.

Key to this plan is the urban renewal of the central business districts (CBDs) in Paarl and Wellington.

With this in mind, the municipality embarked on a range of initiatives to accelerate visible urban regeneration to address the ongoing issues of crime, grime, effective law enforcement and socio-economic development in these two nodes.

In August, the municipality appointed the Western Cape Economic Development Partnership (WCEDP) under the leadership of Andrew Boraine, who successfully led the urban regeneration of the Cape Town central city. The WCEDP will assist the municipality with the implementation of a number of initiatives which were identified during the compilation of the Vision 2032 plan.

These initiatives include: brokering an in-principle agreement among stakeholders to work together to find common solutions to drive the urban regeneration agenda; designing a mutually accountable governance structure to sustain partnering activities in these areas; and most importantly, ensuring that the relevant role-players agree on a joint priority project list for now and the next 14 years.

Drakenstein Municipality will start with stakeholder engagements in the Wellington CBD area and Paarl CBD. It is anticipated that the first phase of the project will be completed by 30 June. The municipality urges all role-players in the respective areas to contact the municipality should they wish to participate in the partnering implementation processes.
