Making kids eco-aware

To create awareness of the environment among schoolchildren, the Mbekweni Eco Club was started in February.

The club is a voluntary non-profit association, and its purpose is to be a facilitator of environmental education for the children and youth of Drakenstein.

Membership is open to youth, schools, churches, sports associations and businesses, and their aim is to facilitate environmental education, create awareness and participation through biodiversity conservation within Mbekweni.

According to Khahliso Lefatsa, co-founder of the Mbekweni Eco Club, it currently works with Grade 5 and 6 learners at Langabuya Primary School in Mbekweni. He said besides taking them on education trips to local places such as the Paarl Bird Sanctuary and, next month, Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, the club also focuses on recycling and water conservation.

Said Lefatsa: “We recently also started with gardening and this brings the children a lot of excitement seeing that something grows from their hard work. If they can work the soil they will see the fruit of their hard labour.”

He said the club also plans to clear illegal dumping sites in Mbekweni and plant trees where the sites were, to encourage residents to keep the environment clean.

The eco awareness activist says the club hopes that by educating the children the adults will follow suit. He says it is grateful for the municipality’s support in achieving its objectives.

Anyone who would like to join the club, or who can donate gardening tools, aprons and gloves for the children, seedlings or seeds, can contact him: 060 813 0748.
