Paarl Post wins awards

It was a night filled with glitz and glamour on Friday 29 June when the best of the best in the South African community newspaper industry came together at Leriba Hotel and Spa in Centurion for the annual Forum of Community Journalists’ Excellence Awards.

The awards have been presented under the auspices of the Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ) for more than two decades and are widely considered the “Oscars” of the local and community media industry.

At the FCJ Excellence Awards local and community newspapers from all over the country, and across all media houses, competed against each other for awards honouring the best of the best in their field.

Paarl Post took second and third place in the Corporate-owned Paid Newspapers category, competing with other papers with circulations of more than 10 000 for the Cronwright Trophy.

Lise Beyers, editor of Paarl Post, was awarded a third place for journalist of the year, and ended up in the top ten for the human interest category. She also ended up in the top seven for editorial comment.

Devidean Moses, a journalist at the Paarl Post received a sixth place in the general photography category. Tandy-Lee Marinus, sports journalist, was among the top 10 for Sport Writing.

In the judges’ report they state the following: Our general impression is that the local newspapers are still very much alive in South Africa. They are indeed serving their communities very well.
