Perfume museum now in Franschhoek

Those with a keen sense of smell can rejoice as Kumanov Perfumery has moved its perfume museum from Blouberg to Franschhoek earlier this year.

It reopened its doors on 1 April in Lambrecht Street and remains the only perfume museum on the African continent.

Aptly named The First South African Perfume Museum, it originally opened its doors in 2012.

According to Daniela Kumanov, the owner, along with her husband, Dimo, the museum boasts a collection of perfume bottles of between 50 and 2 000 years old. She said the artifacts on display are vintage and not about modern perfumes.

“We are open to everyone, locals and tourists,” she said and added that the museum is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 16:00. “During the summer months we will also be open on Sundays.”

Daniela explained that the perfumery does not sell commercial perfumes to the public, but rather gives its visitors the opportunity to blend fragrance oils to create a customised perfume.

The Kumanovs are originally from Bulgaria and Daniela says that her home country is a large exporter of fragrance oils.

“Building on our ancient heritage, we are importers of fine perfume oils and manufacturers of fine fragrances,” she said.

Last year the Perfume Museum won a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.
