Preschooler saves dog

A four-year-old girl saved a dog from near death earlier this year, when the animal was trapped in a storm drain.

Brave little Samantha Lynch climbed into a concrete pipe under a dirt road close to Keerweder Road to save the animal.

Samantha’s parents, Deon and Hilde Lynch, work closely with the Drakenstein Animal Rescue, and when Tessa van Leeuwen Boomkamp asked for their assistance they immediately responded.

“Tessa had on numerous occasions seen the presumably stray dog and tried to attract it, but every time she wanted to get close, the dog ran into the storm drain,” said Hilde. She said the dog had been in a very bad condition and Tessa wanted to take it to the Drakenstein Animal Rescue (DAR) shelter.

“The storm pipe was too narrow for an adult to clamber into, so we needed someone small enough to push the dog out,” Hilde said, “and Sam volunteered to do it.”

When the adults tried to talk her out of it, little Samantha, herself an animal lover, insisted.

And so the brave little girl, equipped with a headlamp and gloves, crawled into the pipe.

During the first attempt, Samantha tried to push the dog out from one end to the other, but it managed to squeeze past her back into the tunnel.

The adults then gave her a rope to put around its neck and push it towards them. This time it worked and the adults were able to bring the dog to safety while Samantha proudly exited the storm pipe on her own.

When asked about the dangers of the rescue, her father said that they did beforehand evaluate all the risks, such as Samantha herself being bitten by the dog or even getting stuck in the pipe.

“But she really wanted to help rescue the dog and at the end of the day all turned out well,” Deon said. “This is an experience she will never forget and we can already see it has built a lot of confidence in her.”

“We rather want our children to have certain experiences, not just gifts.”

And the story has a happy ending, with the dog brought to safety, after which she received medical care and a thorough clean up. She also found a new home and was named Samantha, after her rescuer, by the DAR.
