Saps cluster needs trained detectives

There is a serious shortfall in the Stellenbosch Saps Cluster when it comes to active detective services.

According to a statement by Albert Fritz, minister of community safety of the Western Cape government, the cluster consists of police stations in Cloetesville, Franschhoek, Groot Drakenstein, Klapmuts, Mbekweni, Paarl, Paarl East, Stellenbosch and Wellington.

“At these stations we have two brigadiers, three captains, two colonels and two lieutenant-colonels. We also have a shortfall of 5% in detectives active in these areas,”he said.

There is also a shortfall of 20% in functional vehicles in the cluster, while 57,7% of all detective commanders operational in the Stellenbosch cluster have not completed the detective commander learning programme.

The report also states that 58,4% of all the active detectives in the area are not trained according to the basic detective learning programme. A total of 54,3% of the detectives are not trained in the specialised detective learning programme, while 60,2% of these detectives do not operate with informers.

All the stations have crime intelligence officers, but despite all these shortfalls, the operational detectives met 88,9% of their contact crime detection targets and 77,8% of the stations met their property related crime detection targets.
