Taxi war claims three more lives

PAARL - Three more people were killed in taxi violence related shootings in Mbekweni this past week.

On Tuesday evening, 23 June, around 21:15, an unknown man wearing a black mask and a navy tracksuit top, shot a woman named Lydia Jikelo, residing at White City Open Space.

According to a Mbekweni police spokesperson, Sergeant Nceba Vanqa, Jikelo was fatally wounded and died on the scene.

Jikelo is believed to be an employee of the CATA taxi association.

In another taxi violence related incident, two men were shot and killed at Drommedaris Street in Mbekweni on Friday evening, 19 June, around 21:40.

It is understood that the deceased were taxi owners, one from Mbekweni and the other from Khayelitsha.

According to information Paarl Post received, the suspects are Zambian nationals, aged 33 and 44 respectively.

The shootings are the latest in a series of killings sparked by the taxi war which has terrorised the township since the beginning of the year.

At least 15 taxi-related killings have occurred in the Drakenstein region over the course of a year.

Paarl Post understands the surge in violence can be traced back to disputes over taxi routes, most notably the route between Mbekweni and Bellville.
