Uncontrolled dogs cause problems in Simondium

Untamed dogs have been wreaking havoc between Simondium and Southern Paarl recently, and were responsible for various animals deaths.

On Sunday 5 August Lynn Giles, co-founder of the Pure Paarl Farmer’s Market, posted images on Facebook showing one of her two geese bitten to death by wandering dogs.

The geese were house pets lovingly named Whiskey and Jean. “Jean was also sitting on about a dozen eggs, which were soon to hatch,” said Giles.

“We provide a sanctuary for animals.” The birds are free to roam on the farm land.

Jean’s 13-year-old daughter, Lizzie, is currently raising her third Egyptian gosling by hand. Their sanctuary includes two rescued dogs, seven cats, a peacock and five chickens.

Giles said two adjacent businesses have staff quarters, where each family has at least one untamed dog.

“I called the businesses, but they simply said they don’t have dogs, but they should be responsible for their staff,” she argued.

Giles said she doesn’t have a problem with the dogs, but urged her neighbours to control their pets. She described the incident as “senseless and painful”, and she and Lizzie love all their animals as pets.

Paarl SPCA inspector Lisinda Lubbe said the society is aware of the problem. She advised Paarlites to contact the municipality, which responds quickly and brings such animals to the SPCA.
