Val de Vie cat fight brews

A cat fight is brewing at a luxury Paarl lifestyle estate after a cat was presumably shot.

This comes after a cat owner residing in Val de Vie Estate rushed his cat to a Paarl vet last week when his pet appeared to be ill.

But on closer examination by the veterinarian it was discovered the cat had been shot, presumably with a pellet gun. The pellet was removed and the cat is now reportedly recuperating at home.

Paarl police spokesperson Capt Louise du Plessis said the owner of the cat has requested a police investigation into the matter, which apparently took place on 12 November.

Paarl SPCA inspector Neil Visser said such cases are defined as gross animal abuse. He emphasised that if such a perpetrator is caught he can be charged according to the Anti-Animal Cruelty Act, and further criminal charges can be made against him or her for illegally discharging a firearm in an urban area.

Visser says there are many ways to counteract issues with problematic animals, instead of such acts of abuse.

“Cats can be problematic as they are roamers,” he said. “But there are ways that this can successfully be dealt with.”

The inspector advises that all cats be sterilised, which most often settles cats down so they do not wonder so much.

He also advises cat owners to make plans to secure their properties to keep their cats in.

This could facilitate greater tolerance levels among neighbours, making them more amenable to discussing problems in the quest to find solutions suitable to all.

Anyone with information on the cat shooting incident is requested to contact Paarl Police on 021 807 4016.
