Warm up this winter at the Blacksmith’s Kitchen!

Food Fanatics will be looking to find a warm, cosy spot to fill their belly’s with colourful dishes this winter.

One of these places is the Blacksmith’s Kitchen, a restaurant owned by the well-known Retief family who has farmed on Paarl Mountain for five generations, since 1873.

With the changing landscape of the table grape industry, and capitalising on their excellent location, the family decided to enter the wine and hospitality sectors.

The Retief’s began planting wine grapes in 1999 and made their first wine in 2004.

The tractor shed was diverted into Blacksmith’s Kitchen and a wine shop five years ago. More interestingly, Blacksmith’s Kitchen got its name from the original purpose of the building, which was built in 1747 as a blacksmith’s home and forge.

The restaurant, situated in Northern Paarl offers a short but delicious Mediterranean inspired menu, including crispy thin base wood fired pizzas. All served in a beautiful historical setting on the slopes of Paarl mountain, with fantastic views across the valley.

Since 2014 the business has grown to the extent that it now employs 24 full time staff in the restaurant.

The Retief family believes that they are well on the way to becoming a firm favourite of locals and tourists alike, with Blacksmith’s Kitchen featuring among the other excellent restaurants of Paarl and the Winelands, while serving some of the best wine that the valley has to offer.
