What are you doing for 67 minutes this Mandela Day?

Next week, 18 July, we once again celebrate Mandela Day, to be marked by 67 minutes of good deeds.

Every year on this day, the late former President Nelson Mandela’s birthday, people everywhere celebrate by giving back to communities that need a helping hand. Companies and organisations, for example, give food parcels to the homeless, supply schools with equipment, or it could just be someone doing a simple good deed.

The general idea is to spend 67 minutes of one’s time doing good, each minute representing one year of the 67 Mandela spent in public life, making a huge impact on the world as a global symbol, an icon of the struggle for human rights.

The United Nations declared 18 July International Mandela Day in November 2009, acknowledging his legacy of dedication to humanity and his contribution to the struggle for democracy internationally.

On Mandela Day this year, the Good Green Deeds Clean Up Campaign comes to Paarl. Launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this year to ensure a clean and safe South Africa by educating the public about waste management principles, and to conduct clean-up campaigns in hotspots of illegal waste dumping.

The Department of Environment Affairs, in partnership with the Drakenstein Municipality, is hosting a clean-up in Fairyland involving various community organisations and businesses.

This Mandela Day clean-up will take place in the area between Symphony Street and Bo-Dal Road in Fairyland. The starting point will be at the northerly section of Symphony Street

The clean-up team will also consist of members of Paarl East Police, Working on Fire, Expanded Public Works Programme workers and the community.

Drakenstein Solid Waste Management (SWM) will provide the clean-up teams with bags, rakes, spades, safety bibs, gloves as well as masks.

Those interested in spending their 67 minutes for Madiba by taking part in this clean-up are asked to gather in the designated area at 07:30.
