You too can volunteer

PAARL – When the Covid-19 pandemic hit Drakenstein in March many local residents showed compassion by lending a helping hand to someone in need.

These acts of kindness motivated Drakenstein Municipality to start a volunteer programme.

Jonathan Marthinus, Acting Executive Director: Community Services at Drakenstein Municipality, explained: “During levels 5, 4 and 3 of the lockdown we have once again seen how caring the people of Drakenstein are and how passionate they are about their community. Everyone wants to make a contribution by offering a helping hand to their fellow citizens. It is for this reason that we have developed a policy for our citizens to get involved,” he explains.

Residents volunteer their time by getting involved in clean-ups of local parks or rivers, become support fire fighter volunteers or they can help at 11 of the municipality’s soup kitchens.

“Drakenstein Municipality invites volunteers to assist us in cleaning the environment and public open spaces. A clean environment is a healthy environment, where people can enjoy the beautiful landscapes of our city. By cleaning the rivers we create healthy ecosystems.”

Young men and women can enrol as volunteers at their Fire Services division. The Fire Chief will evaluate each volunteer’s application independently before approval is granted.

“We receive daily requests from individuals who want to donate their time to assist in soup kitchens or help the homeless. We welcome their help.”

To volunteer, contact Derick Damons on 021 807 4853 or 082 415 9342 or send an email to derick@drakenstein.gov.za.
