Youth feeds hungry children

The Oliver Fortuin Foundation is in need of assistance from the Drakenstein community to help raise funds for a worthy cause.

One of the projects of The Foundation is the distribution of food hampers to those in need.

The aim is to fill the empty stomachs of disadvantaged learners during the December holidays, a period when the school feeding scheme is not operational.

This year they have identified local schools which include: Bergendal Primêr, Magnolia Primêr, Nederburg Primêr, Ronwe Primêr and Ebenezer Primêr.

One of the ways of raising funds for the hampers is through the Winter Ball which takes place annually in August. All proceeds generated will be used to purchase the hampers to be distributed to approximately 300 families. This year, the ball generated close to R30 000 and over the past 10 years they have fed close to 3 000 families.

This registered non-profit organisation, is mainly run by young men and women from as young as 16. Together they give their time, money and energy to alleviate the plight of the less fortunate.

It was established in memory of Oliver Fortuin from Paarl who at the tender age of 22 tragically lost his life in a motor vehicle accident in 2007. He is the son of Western Cape High Court judge, Chantal, and lawyer Lloyd Fortuin.

Oliver, who always tried to live a meaningful life, had a remarkable impact on the lives of those close to him as well as the broader community.

After his death friends and family decided to establish the foundation in his honour to ensure that the values he believed in and the example he set will be a guiding light to others.

The handing over of the hampers will take place on 9 December at Annunciation Church, Maasdorp street, Paarl, at 11:30. Anyone who is able to assist financially in any way can send an email to ilkedavids@telkomsa.net
