Paarl Golf’s Employee of the Year

The Club Management Association of South Africa (CMASA) awarded one of its most prestigious annual awards – the Employee of the Year – to Heidi Strydom, Financial Manager at Paarl Golf Club in the Western Cape.

Strydom, who ran her own Accounting and Tax company before joining Paarl Golf Club in 2011, was recognised for her professional ability that has seen large-scale improvements in the club’s financial management.

The winners were announced at the CMASA awards evening held during the last week of August. The awards acknowledge top managers and employees who lead with distinction at a variety of South Africa’s sport and recreation clubs, and are presented in association with Jonas, Go Sport Travel, Toro, Club Car and Syngenta.

Strydom’s financial management skills and knowledge of taxation pertaining to recreational clubs and non-profits has resulted in massive savings for her club, and will serve as a guideline for clubs countrywide and the industry as a whole.

“By winning this award, Paarl Golf Club and I are honoured to be recognised as leaders and achievers in the club industry in South Africa. This is a big milestone for us as we now better understand the Income Tax Act’s application on our revenue sources.

“As the Financial Manager of a smaller club I have been able to do pioneer work in the taxation section of the club industry. I studied the SARS Taxation Act – with special reference to recreational entities – and with the professional assistance of our auditors we worked with SARS in effectively applying the Act to our environment. By doing this we saved on the income tax bill for Paarl Golf Club. Now all CMASA members have a template that has been approved by SARS which all clubs can use to calculate their income tax liabilities.”

CMASA’s General Manager, Janyne Marais, said the association was thrilled with the level of commitment and passion shown by Strydom.

She said: “Heidi has once again proved that professional management, strategic leadership, determination and teamwork can unlock the potential that can enable us to change the lives of the communities we live and work in for the better.”

Strydom’s award includes a R20 000 travel voucher worth from Go Sports Travel and TravelIT.
