Albions’ pull off 7s win

Albions Rugby Club had to dig deep to pull off a stunning come-from-behind 22-14 victory over Rangers in the Cup final of the Violets 7s tournament on Saturday 15 February at Faure Street Stadium.

Albions and Rangers managed to surpass 14 other teams on the day to reach the Cup final.

In the much anticipated derby, it was Rangers that drew first blood with a converted try.

Albions were eager to fight back, but their chip from Keenan Williams was well fielded by Rangers, who regathered the ball and kicked for touch from their 22.

Individual brilliance from Rangers’ playmaker Dale Samuels saw him sniff out a half gap.

He put Zolani Mtitiki through for a 50 m sprint to the try line to make it 14-0 going into half time.

Coming from the break the momentum swung in Albions’ favour when Endrico Claasen broke through a half gap to score underneath the posts, with Aurelio Philander converting his try.

In the blink of an eye Albions scored another try, but missed the conversion to trail by 14-12.

Soon after, they dominated a scrum in Rangers’ 22 and went over for another try to make it 14-17. Rangers’ fans were clearly feeling the heat, but knew their team was still in with a chance.

However, Albions’ Xavier Mitchelle had the last say with a superb Carlos Spencer-like dummy on the right side of the field to ease past would be-tacklers for an unconverted try.

Albions’ 22-14 victory over Rangers in the Cup final saw them go home with a R5 000 reward, while the runners-up received R2 500 as consolation.

In the Plate final Riverstones edged Allandale to win R1 500.

Earlier in the day Paarlzicht Primary and Albions’ juniors both claimed R500 in the u-13 tournament.
