Get ready for the 8 hour Challenge

The annual 8 Hour Wellington Challenge event is again hosted by Ferdinand Rabie of Strongman Events.

This year the event will take place from Saturday 27 to 29 April at the Schalk Burger and Boys’ Welbedacht Wine Estate.

Since its inception in 2016 it has gained popularity as an established event on the local sports calendar.

After the first successful presentation of the Fisherman’s Friend StrongmanRun in Paarl in 2016, requests from mountain bike and cross-country athletes have poured in.

With growing interest in cross-country and cycling athletes to promote sports tourism in Drakenstein, there was a need for an event where they can compete in a combination of individual, relay races and cycling teams for both beginner and advanced elite athletes, but with a night race option.

The safe circuit on the estate will allow participants and supporters to enjoy the event with their families.

The trails traverse the event venue where live music will be hosted for everyone to enjoy and where fans will be able to watch and encourage athletes in a festive atmosphere.

First-class wines from the Welbedacht Wine Route and local food will be available.

Strongman Events is aiming to develop the challenge into a prestigious event by allowing only a limited number of athletes to participate.

An additional category, the Ultimate Challenge, will be added that will be accessible to only 30 invited elites and advanced male and female athletes. They will participate as part of sponsored corporate teams.

The Saturday event will consist of field races where athletes have an option to participate individually or as part of two relay teams.

On Sunday 28 April the individual mountain bike racing (MTB), e-bike rides as well as the Extreme and 2 man races. On Monday 29 April, the full two-game races as well as the Ultimate Challenge will be finalised.

“We are excited about the upcoming event where athletes and fans will enjoy a fun three days. Camping is also provided on site which will make the experience even more unique. This year we expect a large number of entries that will make the event the biggest to date,” Rabie says.

Entry for spectators is free but they are encouraged to bring sanitary towels that will be placed in containers at the entrance for distribution to the community.

* A special discount of R100 will be granted to Paarl Post readers until Monday 22 April if the code “PAARLPOST” (in capital letters) has been entered on their entries.
