Gim breaks four-year drought

Paarl was adorned by a wave of green, yellow and maroon, after Paarl Gimnasium High School narrowly won this year’s iconic Interschools clash against Paarl Boys’ High School on Saturday.

Over the last 104 years, the clash between these arch enemies has been known to be extremely tight, and this year’s match will be remembered as a nail biting finish. The result was determined at the very last moment of the game, when Gimnasium won 18-17.

Boys’ High drew first blood when Angelo Osch ran a magnificent line to break through Gim’s defence, showing his pace and stepping ability to dive over the try line.

The match remained tight, but Gim rose to the challenge, with Jandre Burger putting points on the board with a successful penalty kick. It was all systems go for Gim when feisty wing Curwin Gertse scored the first of his two tries.

Gimnasium dominated the first half, and by half time many pundits made up their minds that the Bloedworse had already won the game.

Gim stretched their lead shortly after the break, when left wing Stravino Jacobs ran through the Boys’ High defence straight from the kick-off, before earning his team a penalty, which Burger converted.

Gertse scored his second try with 16 minutes left to give Gim a 18-5 lead, and it looked like a sure thing that the Bloedwors boys would cruise to victory.

But, Boishaai was not going to hand the match over on a silver platter.

Although 18-5 down in the last five minutes of the match, Boys’ High’s wing, Javier Farmer, finished off a wonderful passage of play that stretched from their own half, eight minutes after the 70 minutes had come and gone. Victory was narrowly lost for Boishaai as the conversion sailed wide of the posts.

Gimnasium’s proud coach Pieter Rossouw said he is extremely grateful to, and very pleased for, his team. “It was truly a team effort.”

Boishaai coach Peter Engledow said of his first Interschools that in his 23 years of rugby coaching he had never experienced a week like it.
