Paarl hockey off to a great start

Hockey season is upon us and the league is off to a great start in Paarl.

The Paarl Hockey Club (PHC) has grown in numbers and will not only showcase exciting hockey but allow PHC to enter more competitive teams into the league.

Players from as far as Malmesbury and CPUT Wellington streamed in as these two clubs will no longer have teams playing in the league, which will also be a massive boost for PHC.

This allowed Paarl Hockey Club to enter an additional women’s team and a fourth men’s side in the leagues. The club now has teams in the Ladies Grand Reserve and Ladies Town Challenge, which is the second and third divisions. The men have teams in the M2, M4 and two teams in the M6 leagues.

“We believe with the players’ potential we should be able to get our first women’s side promoted to the Grand Challenge,” said Gavin Cupido of PHC.”

“The first three men’s teams are all working to get promoted at the end of the season. The top two teams will be considered for promotion in these leagues.”

The club’s aim with the newly entered fourthh side is to build a strong core and establish them in the M6 league this season.

Off the field a big focus for Paarl Hockey Club is to get the Drakenstein Municipality to see the need for a public hockey facility with artificial turf.

All league matches must be played on astro turf and for this the club hires fields from local schools.

The club has more than 100 players and is still growing.
