Rocks win the Super League

Paarl Rocks rocked all expectations on Monday evening, when they very convincingly thrashed the Tswane Spartans on home turf in the Mzansi Super League final, winning the match by eight wickets.

A whirlwind innings by local cricketer Henry Davids of Pniel helped secure Paarl Rocks on their road to victory.

The Rocks bowlers limited the Tshwane Spartans to 147/6 in their 20 overs, and it was Davids (77 * from 44 deliveries) batting that made the target of 148 look easy.

He scored the fastest fifty in the MSL when he needed only 22 balls to make the previous milestone. Davids, who celebrates his 40th birthday next month, showed no mercy towards the bowlers.

Where the Spartans could score only eight fours and two sixes in their entire innings, Davids smashed eight fours and four flew over the boundary.

The Rocks’ 8-wicket win was their first in five attempts over the men from the north. The home team reached the target with another 34 balls at their disposal.

Davids was assisted by Dwaine Pretorius (43 from 20; 1x4, 4x6), who had to pass a fitness test on Sunday to be included in the team. He is recovering from a cracked bone in his right hand.

The Rocks hit 72 without losing a wicket in the first power play (six overs), which meant they had to score only 76 runs from the last 84 balls, with all 10 wickets standing.

Davids and Cameron Delport (18), scored 80 runs for the first wicket.

The Paarl Rocks relied on their bowlers throughout the series to win matches. And Monday was no different, as they kept the target within reach.
