Is this banking or queuing?

Many years ago I left my bank after being a loyal customer for more than 35 years. The sole reason was the long queues in the two branches remaining after restructuring.

I am aware of the functions now available at the ATMs, and they are equally available at my new bank, with which I am more than satisfied.

A few days ago I had occasion to visit this bank again, and was reminded why I had left. I was not surprised to notice that only five tellers were on duty, out of a possible 14.

What also struck me were the signs at the empty counters requesting customers to use the next counter. There were nine such signs. That got me thinking, who ordered nine signs? That equals 64% of counters. Is that the norm, to have only 36% of capacity assisting their clients?

Thirty minutes later, I was assisted by a very friendly and helpful employee, and left the branch with a smile knowing I am no longer its client.
