The fact that the municipality now wants to “tax” people living in smaller townhouses and flats is nothing more than daylight robbery.
It is evident that these homes use much less refuse that bigger homes where more people also live, but now suddenly the municipality has decided to charge them a huge amount for monthly refuse removal – almost R300 more.
Mr Carstens said last week that there are various components to refuse removal, not just driving the rubbish away. But did they consider the following:
. At flats or complexes the rubbish truck just makes one stop, and that is outside the area where the rubbish bins are. They thus do not have to drive from house to house.
. Such residential complexes look after their own areas around the homes, thus the municipality does not have sidewalks, and so on, to clean (not that they do this much in any case).
Many of these little homes only accommodate one or two people, and thus generally use less services such as sewage, and so on. But we are being now considered in the same light as large households.
Also, many of us go to lots of trouble to recycle - I now wonder what the purpose of this is, now that we are being punished with this ludicrously high tariff?
Where was this increase publicized for public scrutiny and what else is the municipality trying to hide from us?
This is completely unfair and undemocratic, and I wonder if someone with legal background has looked closely at this.
This is no more than daylight robbery and to put it bluntly, absolutely rubbish. Are we just going to sit back and accept this?
Can we arrange our own refuse removal to the dump site?
