Bicycle frame of R128 000 stolen

A thief, with very expensive taste, stole a bicycle frame at a bicycle repair shop in Durbanville.

The Durbanville police is in need of information about the theft to try to solve the case.

According to Captain Marchell Rhode, spokesperson of the Durbanville police, a black Colnago carbon bicycle frame worth R128 000 was stolen at Carbon Bicycle Repairs in Chenoweth Street, Durbanville on 6 May.

James Perry, owner of Carbon Bicycle Repairs, told TygerBurger the thief must have gained access to their shop by forcing open the electronic latch of their security gate with a card, similar to a bank card.

The bicycle frame with its components was stored in a box, he said. He only realised the next day that it is missing.

“The thief probably thought he was stealing a new bicycle. The components only, consisting of the brake and gears, was worth R60 000,” he said.

“It is mindblowing to think this can happen. We have installed security cameras after the theft,” he said.

Anyone with information can contact Detective Constable Godfried Williams of the Durbanville detective branch on 021 970 5600 or 082 522 1544.
