Body found on beach

The police have opened an inquest docket in an effort to determine the identity of the person whose body washed up on a West Coast beach last week.

A body, or parts thereof, washed up near Sunset Beach, Milnerton on Thursday 4 October.

News of the discovery was also shared on the Sunset Beach Cape Town Facebook page.

“Dead human body on Sunset Beach, SAPS guarding remains, awful,” one person wrote on the page.

This was confirmed by the Milnerton police who attended the scene at 11:20. According to Captain Nopaya Madyibi, police spokesperson, upon their arrival police found human remains at the scene. Madyibi says the gender and age of the individual are still unknown.

An inquest docket was registered and is still under investigation, she says.

Asked whether the remains might be that of a young man who drowned two weeks ago at Milnerton Lagoon Beach, Madyibi indicated that the authorities cannot confirm that as yet.

“We cannot confirm it, as we are waiting for DNA tests and postmortem results determining the cause of death and the person’s identity,” Madyibi says.

The National Sea Rescue Institute indicated at the time of the drowning that the police’s dive unit had continued their search for a 20-year-old man who had disappeared beneath the surf after being swept out to sea by rip currents on Monday 24 September. The deceased was from Belhar and was swimming with his 22-year-old friend at the time, who was fortunately rescued by two surfers.

The search area extended from Milnerton Lagoon Beach to Milnerton Beach at Woodbridge Island.

One person commented on Facebook that her boyfriend had seen a few human body parts the day before Thursday, and that they had informed the police about it. “They must have found the rest, so terrible,” the person wrote.

Another indicated that the head and arms of the person were apparently missing.
