Brackenfell Lions to roar again

Brackenfell Lions are well on its way in its endeavours to restore the once vibrant club to its former glory.

Lions Club International is an international non-political service organisation established originally in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, by Melvin Jones.

As of January 2020, it had over 46 000 local clubs and more than 1.4 million members, including the youth wing Leo, in more than 200 countries around the world.

Membership numbers at the Brackenfell club have dwindled over the years due to many factors, but following a recent call for new members, the club had a fair response from the public last week with many new faces at the last meeting.

“We would like to thank those readers who expressed their interest in joining our club and who attended our ‘meet and greet’ session on 24 February. We are ever grateful for the interest shown and know that there are many more like minded people out there who may have missed our first post or maybe who have been thinking about it and are not yet sure.

“Attending one of our sessions creates no expectations from our side because we respect the preferences of each and every individual. What we do know is that once you have been and experienced what Lions International is all about, you will not want to change your mind,” says acting chair Gary Badenhorst.

Brackenfell Lions Club was established in 1973.

“As a service organisation we serve the community at large. When disaster strikes Lions International are the first to respond,” says Badenhorst.

The stated purpose of Lions Club International include to promote the principles of good government and good citizenship; to take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community; to unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding and to provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest.

Membership is open to anyone and everyone, including children. Their next “meet and greet” will take place at 19:00 at their club house at 5 Dorrey Street, Brackenfell, on 11 March.
