‘Bushes of death’

The bushes behind Blue Downs magistrate’s court and the Mfuleni police station are dangerous and the local police have warned people living in the surrounding areas to be vigilant when they walk there.

At least three bodies have been found in the bushes this year.

WO November Filander, police spokesperson, issued the warning about the area.

“People should always be safety conscious when walking through bushy areas, which they use as a short-cut home, or to work. Bushy areas could be used as hiding places for criminals to rob, rape, or even kill unsuspecting victims. If you walk through bushy areas, always walk in groups, but it is better to walk through well-lit areas. Also if you see a stranger in the bushes do not stop, get away as soon as you can,” says Filander.

In June the naked body of a woman was found in the bushes. At that stage, it was suspected that the woman was strangled and her body dumped there.

Lourna Frieselaar from the local community policing forum (CPF) agrees that the bushes are not only an eyesore, but also an extremely dangerous place. “The bushes are close to two schools, a court, the police station, a shopping centre and a clinic and people walk through it because it is quicker. On the days when people receive social grants, thieves are waiting in the bushes to ambush them. These are usually the most vulnerable people in society,” says Frieselaar.

She says the land on which the bushes grow is privately owned and they have been trying for a while to find out who the owners are. “The telephone lines of the police station run through the bushes and on many occasions the wires are stolen. This causes policing problems as the public cannot get hold of the police. I want to urge the owners of the land to come forward and help us clear the bushes to help our community,” says Frieselaar.

By the time of going to print TygerBurger could not yet establish who the owner of the land is.
