Cardinals ready to play ball

After having played baseball in the southern suburbs for over 30 years, local resident Hilton Samuels along with Eastern Dove, Ashley Hendricks and Lance McKinnon decided that it was time to bring the sporting code to Kuils River in the form of the Kuils River Cardinals Baseball Club.

All four serve as executive members of the club, with Samuels serving as captain, Dove as chairperson, Hendricks as coach and McKinnon as trustee.

“After three years of discussing the idea, we finally decided to take the big step in June last year,” explains Samuels.

Currently the club has 17 registered players and 10 non-playing members. “We currently have one senior team which participates in the Cape Town Baseball Federation (CTBF) Masters League, but our intention is to promote the club throughout this season (and off-season) in order to register two senior teams and at least one junior team by next season,” says Samuels.

Though starting the club and acquiring equipment and uniforms was not a particularly difficult task Samuels shares that acquiring a home field, on which to play their games, has been. “We have identified the Jagtershof sports facility as the ideal grounds on which to establish our home base, but have run into major resistance from the local rugby club. We were fortunate this season that Durbanville Baseball Club offered us the use of their field for all our home games. We are also pleased that our discussions with the City of Cape Town have been very positive and we are awaiting confirmation of a home field within Kuils River before the start of next season,” he says.

Baseball is a summer sport, with the official league running from mid-October until the end of March.

“There has been a fantastic response to baseball from within the larger Kuils River community. There has also been quite the demand for junior teams,” says Samuels.

Despite having only participated in one season the Kuils River Cardinals Baseball Club currently hold a mid-table position on the official league table, and have even beaten the well-established Silvertree Baseball Club in a pre-season game.

“We are here to stay,” says Samuels. “Baseball is a fantastic development sport for boys and girls as it encompasses both team and individual sport disciplines. Not only are players’ hand-eye-coordination strengthened by the amount of hitting, catching and running demanded by the sport, but it also enforces discipline and respect. Most junior baseballers carry these values with them throughout their lives.”

Anyone interested in joining the Kuils River Cardinal Baseball team’s upcoming season can feel free to make contact with the club via Facebook or contact Samuels directly on 071 754 4547.
