Case against three vehicle examiners postponed

Three vehicle examiners, Abraham Neethling (64), Abdul Philander (55) and Fagrie Adams (37) have been released on R2000 bail after being charged with fraud and corruption.

The trio is based at the Epping vehicle testing centre.

According to Hawks spokesperson Captain Philani Nkwalase the arrest followed a joint investigation by the Hawks’ serious corruption investigation unit and the provinicial departments of transport and public works, and traffic that are in a quest to clamp down on the illegal issuing of fraudulent roadworthy certificates in the province.

“It is alleged that the two examiners from the Epping vehicle testing centre issued three fraudulent certificates to vehicles ferrying learners despite the same vehicles deemed not fit to be operated on public roads,” Nkwalase said.

They were taken off the public roads during an operation in March.

“The third suspect, also from the same centre was arrested following a tipoff from the public through the fraud-line. It is alleged that he facilitated the issuing of a fraudulent roadworthy certificate of a heavy duty truck without following due processes,” said Nkwalase.

He told TygerBurger Philander appeared at the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 13 June. His case was postponed to 29 August. The other two appeared at the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on the same day. Their case was postponed to Thursday 4 July.
