CBC learner tuning up for the concerto

A CBC St John’s Parklands learner is ecstatic that he will be taking part in the Hugo Lambrechts Concerto Festival.

The Grade 12 learner, John Graayenstein is one of the 16 young soloists that successfully auditioned and will have the opportunity to perform with the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Liam Burden.

John, from Bellville South, says this is a dream come true and an opportunity that he will grab with both hands. He will be blending into the concerto with his tenor.

“I have only been to the concerto once but my sister never misses it. Now going there and being on stage is really amazing,” he says.

The Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre will celebrate its 22nd annual Concerto Festival on Saturday 24 August at 19:00.

As always, the winner of the 2018 Samro Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition, the young pianist Weien Amy Luo from KwaZulu-Natal, will perform. In addition, the winner of the 2018 Pieter Kooij Music Competition and soloist at the Len van Zyl Conductors Competition, pianist Gerhard Joubert, has also been selected as a soloist, together with several other young musicians from Cape Town, Somerset West and Paarl.

The programme for the Concerto Festival includes compositions by Bach, Haydn, Peskanov, Lehar, Kabalevsky and the South African composer Noel Stockton from Bloemfontein.

John says this is a big deal for him.“I have never really sung with an orchestra so I’m looking forward to every moment.

“All the effort that I had put in is now beginning to pay off,” he says. When he was in Grade 10, his music teacher told him if he works hard, he will be able to enter this competition, he says. “I have always wanted to enter this competition. I worked hard. It was not always easy but I’m glad that I made the cut. I’m really grateful to my parents and my school. They are very supportive,” he says adding that his teachers come out to watch him perform all the time.

“They say an apple never falls far from the tree, this also goes for me as I come from a very musical family. “My grandfather is very musical. My parents are not so musical but they are very supportive. I’m really grateful for that,” he says. His sister is also very musical.

He started at a very tender age and with hard work, he is reaping the benefits. He adds what is most important to him is discipline and for him, schoolwork takes priority. “Schoolwork is always a priority and I’m grateful that my teachers are always accommodative and always looking at alternatives to accommodate my music as well,” he says.

His favourite subject is drama and he will be studying music and theatre at Stellenbosch University (US).

Tickets cost R130 or R100. To book call the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre on 021 939 9105 or email info@hugolambrechts.co.za.
