Clinic reopens after Covid-19
Covid-19

The Dunoon community health centre reopened last week after successfully decontaminating the premises, the provincial health department said.

The centre temporarily closed its doors on Thursday 14 May after three health care workers tested positive for Covid-19. Provincial health department spokesperson Natalie Watlington, said workers who had been in contact with those who tested positive were sent home for isolation.

“We can confirm that three members of the staff at Dunoon community day centre have tested positive for Covid-19.

The Dunoon community day centre temporarily closed their outpatient department (OPD) and their emergency centre (EC) on Thursday 14 May, for decontamination of affected areas due to staff at the facility testing positive for Covid-19. Both the EC and OPD have since re-opened,” Watlington said.

The provincial health minister, Nomafrench Mbombo, visited Dunoon last week, encouraging residents to get screened and tested.

According to Mbombo, Dunoon is a high-density area, leaving residents vulnerable to contract Covid-19.

One of the workers who wants to remain anonymous, said there was a strike last week due to some staff testing positive.

“We are not protected at work and the government is doing nothing to put the necessary measures in place. All we want as front-line workers is to be properly protected as the number of deaths of health care workers continues to increase,” she said.

Watlington explained that an increase in cases is expected in areas where gatherings take place – health facilities are one such area.

“These members have been tested and sent home for isolation. The facility has followed the guidelines for infection and prevention control to ensure that all areas where these staff members were present have been deep cleaned. Once the areas are ready and the remaining staff have been screened and found not to pose a risk, they can resume duty in these areas.”
