Cops warn of rise in carjacking

Delft police are seeking information following various carjacking incidents in the area.

A 38-year-old man fell victim to a carjacking when his white 2002 model Mazda 323 was stolen in Sapele Road, Thubelitsha, Delft South, on Wednesday 1 August.

Police spokesperson Captain John Bartlett says the man was also robbed of his immigration forms. “As he was rolling down his window he felt something in his neck and discovered it was a firearm. The unknown male suspect instructed him to get out of the vehicle and to lie on the ground. The suspect searched him and took his Nokia cellphone, his wallet containing cash amounting to R1000, his driver’s licence and his immigration papers.

“While he was still lying on the ground they drove off with his vehicle. The vehicle is a white 2002 model Mazda 323 with registration number CA 99017.”

In another incident on Tuesday 31 July, a 28-year-old man was sitting with friends in his vehicle at Symphony Way, N2 Gateway, Delft, when they were approached by three men.

“One of the suspects pointed a firearm at the victim and instructed him to get out of the vehicle. The suspects drove off with his vehicle with his friends still inside. The complainant later found out that his friends had been dropped off unharmed just before Hindle Road on Symphony Way. The suspects drove off in the direction of Delft South.

“The vehicle is a silver 2012 model Ford Figo with registration number CF 20131. The windows of the vehicle are lightly tinted with steel hubcaps and a sticker on right rear of the vehicle,” explains Bartlett.

And then on Tuesday 31 July in Krinkhout Street, Delft South, a 35-year-old man from Mitchell’s Plain was carjacked when he went to fetch a colleague in Delft South.

“While in Krinkhout Street, he observed a Toyota Quantum parked in the road.

An unknown man approached him and knocked on the window with a firearm. The complainant ran to his colleague’s house, but the suspects caught him and robbed him of cash amounting to R4000 and his workplace’s office keys.

“The suspects drove off with the company vehicle, a white 2004 model Toyota Hilux bakkie with registration number CA 25093. On both doors are stickers reading ‘Glass Fit’.”

Bartlett says police have registered cases of carjacking for investigation.

No arrests have been made and the vehicles are yet to be retrieved. Anyone with information about the incidents is requested to contact Delft police on 021 954 9000 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
