Creating the guest room of your dreams

With the holiday season upon us, more and more families will be welcoming guests into their homes –be it family visiting from abroad, a son or daughter home for the holidays or friends you may not have seen for a long time.

Mike Greeff, CEO of Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate says you want to place them in a guest room fitting to suit all their needs.

“When you envision a guest room, you envision a place of peace and quiet and one that your guest will be happy to spend time in. There are a few central elements that define a guest room to make it one of the more memorable places for that friend or family member,” says Greeff.

Follow these tips to ensure your guest room is one that is truly unforgettable:

SpaceFace it, your guest may not be spending a lot of time in their room. The holidays will be filled with exciting activities and family experiences. However, when they do turn in for the night or choose to lie in, it is essential for the room to be spacious. Space is one of the biggest afterthoughts when it comes to selecting which room will serve as your guest room. Homeowners tend to select a room they would most least likely choose for their children or as a master bedroom and unfortunately it shows. When choosing a room in your home, even in the process of renovation, be sure to choose a roomy room for your guests, this will give them a feeling of space and relaxation over this unwinding period.

It should have its own looA guest in your home, no matter who they are, will always feel like a guest. Give them the peace of mind of having a room with its own shower and loo for when its needed. While space may not be the biggest concern here, a private place to freshen up will tick all the boxes in making your guest’s stay even more pleasant.

ViewsIf your property benefits from views of the mountain vista or sea, make sure your guest room benefits too. When guests awake or retreat for the night, views of the above are sure to make their stay more memorable. Nothing speaks of a more relaxing time than a retreat to your own deck for a morning or evening lookout.

Follow a neutral colour schemeA guest room should not only have wonderful views, be spacious and have its own loo, it should also be decorated in a neutral colour scheme. Your guest may be tired once they arrive and would want to retreat to their room for a period to rest and refresh. Ensure their room is decorated and designed for the clever incorporation of pastel coloured linens for the sleeping area. A neutral colour scheme will further elevate the feeling of space and relaxation.
