Digital Winter School for grade 11 and 12 learners

The aim of the proposed I-CAN Digital Winter School is to add value, support learning, improve results and ignite a passion among Grade 11 and Grade 12 computer application technology students.

I-CAN Centre manager, Llewellyn Scholtz, says students who participate in the programme will receive international certification, which will be conducted online through the Certiport console.

“The Genesis Community IT Initiative is a registered Certiport-authorised exam testing centre that enables citizens to obtain Microsoft and Adobe certifications that are internationally recognised,” Scholtz says.

He says that many students in grades 11 and 12 are faced with various socio-economic issues that incapacitate them to see a bright future. “This results in them failing or dropping out of school, due to a lack of innovative learning through other mediums. Socio-economic issues affect the concentration of a student, resulting in that student not becoming successful through commitment and dedication,” Scholtz says.

Therefore the winter school programme will provide learners with an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom environment while strengthening and supporting students’ knowledge and skills in various Microsoft applications, improving students’ results and performance through in-depth knowledge of Microsoft, stimulating students’ drive to achieve competency on an international level, and preparing students and boosting their confidence for the final exams.

“We expect the results of this programme to have equipped the Grade 11 learners with international Digital Literacy certification and the Grade 12 learners with international Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Word and Excel certification,” he says.

Scholtz says the programme will run for a period of three weeks (three days per week, amounting to one course) and will accommodate 100 learners. “Learners only need to attend three days and then write a Microsoft international exam,” he says.
