‘Drive-by’ claims one

Bonteheuwel Avenue was brought to a standstill on Thursday 5 July when an alleged drive-by shooting claimed the life of a 17-year-old male.

It’s alleged that the victim is Keanu Green, the suspect who was acquitted of the murder of Netreg train driver Piet Botha.

A resident who asked to remain anonymous revealed to TygerBurger what seemed to be a drive-by shooting.

“On Thursday evening (around 19:00) we just heard shooting. There were more than 10 gunshots that went off.

“As I went outside, I saw a whole lot of people running in the road, then there were two bodies lying there. One body was covered. There wasn’t anything wrong with the other person who was lying in the road. I heard that the murdered man’s name is something like Keanu.” The resident says that not too long after the shooting, they heard sirens, “which was probably when the police were chasing the suspects. They were driving a blue car.” The witness could not specify the model of the car.

Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, confirmed to TygerBurger that a chase ensued: “On Thursday (July 5) at approximately 18:50, Bishop Lavis members responded to a complaint of a shooting on the corner of Bonteheuwel Avenue and Mahogany Street in Bonteheuwel.

“On their arrival at the crime scene, members heard shots fired and saw a blue Honda Ballade motor vehicle coming out of Mahogany Street.

Members gave chase after the speeding-away Honda Ballade.” Van Wyk says a shootout ensued between police and the suspects.

“The occupants of the Honda Ballade motor vehicle started shooting at the chasing police members and the members retaliated by shooting at them. The suspect vehicle smashed into a stationary vehicle in Bluegum Street, Bonteheuwel.

“The occupants jumped out of the damaged vehicle and fled the scene, while one of the suspects kept on shooting at police. Members shot the suspect in his right leg and he then surrendered by throwing his firearm on the ground.”

Van Wyk says police confiscated a 9mm Beretta firearm and magazine. “A 23-year-old male was arrested on charges of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, attack on police and resisting arrest.”

Anyone that can assist police with the investigation of this case can contact Detective Sergeant Koki of Bishop Lavis police on 079 894 1776.

Van Wyk would not confirm whether the deceased in this incident was Keanu Green.

All he stated was the following: “Circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Thursday (5 July) at about 19:56 at the corner of Mahogany Street and Bonteheuwel Avenue, Bonteheuwel, where a 17-year-old male was fatally wounded is under investigation. A murder case has been registered for investigation.”
