‘Drug house’ in Bontas raided, shut down

A tipoff, followed by a successful raid led to the closure of a “drug house” in Candlewood Street, Bonteheuwel.

Local councillor Angus McKenzie said the doors were shut on Tuesday 12 January.

“A huge thanks must go to residents who have assisted hugely in ensuring that relevant information is brought forward for us to act upon. Law enforcement has consistently been assisting with raids. Towards the end of last year a drug house in Blombos Street that caused major problems was also shut down.

“We are relentless in closing drug houses in our area. The trade of drugs is based on demand and supply so while there is a demand for the product there will consistently be a supply of the product. We need to ensure that where we can shut these drug houses down, we do it as quickly as possible. We have recently closed two council rental stock properties belonging to the City of Cape Town,” said McKenzie.

He encouraged residents to continue coming forward.

“Candlewood Street has become notorious with drug trade, gangsterism and all other social ills attached to it. It caused neighbours relentless problems and disturbed the peace greatly in the area. We will not tolerate the pain and suffering gangsters and drug dealers are causing and we will use all legal remedies at our disposal to rid our communities of these individuals. Our fight for peace has been relentless and we are far from tired.

“We are encouraging people to contact 021 480 7700 when it comes to houses like this. The more complaints we get, the better to get it shut down,” he added.

Bishop Lavis police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi said they have mapped out where the trade takes place.

“Drug houses in the policing precinct are known. Our successes in the area are proof of our visibility.”
