Funds needed for assessment

Local non-profit organisation Badisa Trio is pleading with the community to help raise funds for an assessment of a five-year-old girl.

This assessment by a social worker will assist Cindy’s (not her real name) caseworker to get the help she needs to start rebuilding her life.

A post on the organisation’s website describes Cindy as a talkative little girl who has had to endure growing up between homes.

“He parents suffer from severe mental illness which impaired their parental capacities significantly,” the post reads.

Because Cindy is so young, the court has ordered for her to be assessed by a forensic social worker.

The assessment will cost R3 900 and is not state-funded.

“Forensic assessments assist caseworkers to provide the courts with factual information in order to make a recommendation that would serve the best interest of the child concerned,” Badisa Trio’s social worker, Sjean Smit said.

The assessment will obtain uncontaminated data by means of consultations, interviews, biographical questionnaires, reports as well as collateral information.

After the assessment, a recommendation will be made to the court regarding the best interest of the child, for example, placement in alternative care or intervention services such as parental support and therapeutic services to the child and family.

“This recommendation will depend on the outcome of the assessment and the social worker’s investigation,” Smit said further.

So far, she said no one has come forward to contribute to the campaign and she said they would like to start with the assessment as soon as possible.

The organisation identified Cindy through an anonymous report to the office.

Smit could not provide more information due to the Children’s Act, Act 38 of 2005.

Badisa Trio is a registered non-profit social service and public welfare organisation which forms part of both the Dutch Reformed and Uniting Reformed churches.

It delivers holistic and integrated social services to individuals, families and communities in need.

Services are rendered in partnership with various stakeholders including local and provincial government departments as well as other non-profit organisations.

Child protection services are rendered in Bellville, Durbanville, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and Scottsdene.
