Group offers support to cancer patients

Wings of Hope Cancer Support, a non-profit organisation which was established in Johannesburg in 2012 to provide support to cancer patients and survivors, recently launched a group in the greater Cape Town area.

Teresa Rightford, one of the organisation’s committee members, says she recently moved back to Welgelegen after living in Johannesburg for many years.

Rightford is a cancer survivor herself and is passionate about supporting not only cancer patients but also the people close to them.

As a support group, Wings of Hope supports patients telephonically, visits patients undergoing treatment and holds meetings every six to eight weeks where doctors, specialists or other related speakers talk about relevant topics to aid recovery. The group also has an interactive Facebook page. The funds raised are used for public meetings, facilities, flyers and educational leaflets regarding cancer and also for care packs to give to oncology patients.

The group aims to create a warm and passionate environment in which support is provided not only to cancer patients and survivors but also to their spouses, partners, parents, children, siblings, friends and caregivers.

Rightford says research has shown that support groups help reduce the three most significant stressors associated with cancer: unwanted aloneness, loss of control, and loss of hope.

Wings of Hope Cancer Support is a member of the Cancer Alliance of South Africa, primarily contributing towards managing cancer in the workplace.

Wings of Hope Cancer Support will be holding a public meeting at the Portuguese Cultural and Welfare Centre on the corner of Frankfort Street and First Avenue in Parow on Saturday 26 May at 09:30 for 10:00. Ina Meiring will speak on cancer and pain management. Entry is free. For information, contact Teresa on 079 880 3995 or email Teresa.rightford@gmail.com.
